Assigning Bike Components to Multiple Bikes

Enable users to assign bike components to multiple bikes, enhancing flexibility for tracking shared components across different setups.

Uses cases:

  • Shared Components Across Bikes: Users who share components such as a wheelset between two or more bikes (e.g., a road bike and a gravel bike) can accurately track their usage without duplication or manual adjustments.

  • Single Bike with Separate Strava Bikes: Cyclists who have split their single bike into two bikes in Strava (e.g., one for outdoor rides and one for indoor trainer sessions) can still track shared components like the chain or cassette seamlessly.

Since 7th July you can move an installed component from one bike to another in a single step. Open the component's menu, choose Move to another bike, then pick the destination bike, the date and time of the move, and the ride type.

How do you guys like it? 🙏 Does it already make things easier for you?

As you might read in our product update newsletter, we almost shipped the multi-bike feature last month and pulled back last minute. You requested it, we built it, it was ready. But it broke the idea everything in Geer rests on: we represent what happens in real life. And in real life, a component can't be on two bikes at the same time.

So in the end we identified three real use-cases for this feature:

#1) A shared wheelset, swapped between two frames.
#2) Indoor + outdoor, same bike set up twice in Strava ("Tarmac" / "Tarmac + Kickr").
#3) Stuff you wear: cleats, helmet, bike computer.

We found out that not one of them actually wanted multi-bike assignment. Bear with me:

#1 is a swap, not "two bikes at once." Installing one wheelset on both frames would make your history lie. A faster way to swap a component between bikes fits this better. And that is what already shipped. Try it out.

#2 is already dead. It's a workaround from before Strava added the "Virtual Ride" type. Strava solved it.

#3 struck us the longest. A helmet just rides along with you on every ride. That's a rider component that would get all mileage across your fleet. Easy. But then: cleats. Road cleats only wear on road rides. They don't belong to a bike, and they don't belong to everything either. They belong to a kind of riding. And that's where the feature eventually fell apart: the question was never which bike. It was always which rides wear this part. And the good news: Strava already tells us the ride type.

So we’re thinking about a feature where you can assign components to ride types only. What do you guys think about that?

If you've got a use-case we missed, please tell us what you were actually trying to do. We need your input. That's how we get this right 🙏
